This is a guest post from David Goldsmith at DG Business Consultants As an HR consultant I’m often asked if HR really has any place in a business, let alone a small business and if it’s just expensive paperwork that gets in the way of doing real business? To answer this question, over the next few months I’m going to invite you read about various HR related topics, the different areas of HR, what they do, the costs of using it and the costs of not using it and let you decide whether HR is expensive paperwork or an important asset that every business should have access to no matter how big or how small. Do you use the HMRC Government Gateway? It’s a great idea to have your own login for the Government Gateway for your business in order to check what they have on record for your tax liabilities. HMRC have been updating the interface to give you a dashboard that shows all of your tax liabilities at a glance. In fact it’s the only way to keep an eye on your PAYE account during the year as our Agent logins don’t allow us to have this information. If you haven’t applied for a login already give us a call and we can talk you through how to do it. Read More

Did you know that you no longer have to keep paper records of your accounts? HMRC have issued guidance that specifically allows for your records to be kept digitally, as long as certain backups and care is taken to protect your data, for the past 6 years. Read More

Many of our clients say that debt collection is one of the items on the to-do list that they most dread! Who wants to spend time on the phone calling up late payers and asking them for money? It’s collaborative. Because Xero is a cloud accounting app, we’re able to work on it at the same time as our clients, without having to transfer data files, check who has the up to date copy, or wait for the month end. We can log in and answer questions whilst looking at the same screens, even if we’re in different locations. We can take over bookkeeping tasks if they are too busy at certain times of the year.
It’s Real Time. Xero has bank feeds and these have revolutionised the way we do accounting. No more waiting for the end of the month before checking our transactions against the bank statements. We can see how a business is doing right now, at any point in the year. It also means clients don’t have to spend the weekend writing up their books; they can take a little and often approach and always have their accounts up to date.
It’s great value for money. No more annual subscriptions, support fees, or implementation costs. A monthly subscription makes budgeting for your accounting software a breeze – and for most businesses it’s just £20 per month.
It works with Add-Ons. Use other cloud apps such as a CRM system, online shopping cart, or inventory management? Xero plays nicely with other cloud apps such as Salesforce, Zoho, Mailchimp, Debtor Daddy – the list is endless.
It’s written for business owners. Xero is aimed at people running SME businesses and it speaks their language. You don’t have to understand accountants’ speak to use it and the help and support videos are great. It gives you the reports you need to run your business better, and they’re in an easy-on-the-eye format.

A question we often get asked is how to put together a financial report pack for sharing with the board of Directors or, if you run your own business, for suing as a formal month end procedure. Xero is great for this, as it has a management report pack built right into the software. It covers cash, P&L, Balance Sheet, Aged Debtors and Creditors, all at the single press of a button. Ideally, you “chase” your customers before they even become late payers, by pre-warning them when an invoice is about to become due. This proactive approach gives you a chance to communicate with your customers in a friendly and helpful way, and it also stops them becoming late or bad debtors. Read More

Have you made a budget or a forecast for your business for this year? Whilst talking at Springboard for Success this past Friday I asked a room of businesswomen how many had written a budget. Out of 35, less than 5 put their hands up. This really surprised me; these are women who had taken a day away from their successful businesses to spend time thinking and learning about how to improve them. But they hadn't written a financial plan regarding what they were trying to achieve, or how they were to do it. Read More

Xero is a brilliant solution for bookkeeping in the cloud - and it has a great online help with lots of video and user-friendly content. But sometimes clients want a quick answer to their "How do I do this in Xero?" questions and we're really happy to talk them through it. This week we thought it would be good to share some of those frequently asked questions, and our responses, in case you were wondering "How do I do this?" too. Read More
